Five Questions to Ask When Writing Your Personal Mission Statement

In his book, The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren lists life's five greatest questions that need to be answered when writing your personal mission statement. Here are the questions:

1. What will be the center of my life? What's most important to you?

2. What will be the character of my life? What kind of person will you be?

3. What will be the contribution of my life? When you are gone, what will you be remembered for?

4. What will be the communication of my life?

5. What will be the community of my life? What people are most important to you?

Very thought-provoking questions.

Characteristics of Empowering Mission Statements

I saw this in Stephen Covey's First Things First and thought I'd share it.

According to his book, an empowering mission statement:

1. represents the deepest and best within you. It comes out of a solid connection with your deep inner life.

2. is the fulfillment of your own uniqure gifts. It's the expression of your unique capacity to contribute.

3. is transcendent. It's based on principles of contribution and purpose higher than self.

4. addresses and integrates all four fundamental human needs and capacities (to live, to love, to learn, to leave a legacy). It includes fulfillment in physical, social, mental, and spiritual dimensions.

5. is based on principles that produce quality-of-life results. both the ends and the means are based on true north principles.

6. deals with both vision and principle-based values. It's not enough to have values without vision - you want to be good, but you want to be good for something. On the ohter hand, vision without values can create a Hitler. An empowering mission statement deals with both character and competence; what you want to be and what you want to do in your life.

7. deals with all the significant roles in your life. It represents a lifetime balance of personal, family, work, community - whaterver roles you feel are your to fill.

8. is written to inspire you - not to impress anyone else. It communicates to you and inspires you on the most essential level.

A Mission Statement That Works

As this blog has become more popular, I have noticed a lot of people saying that mission statements are boring and useless. I disagree. Yes, if a company develops a mission statement but fails to use it to empower their employees, then it is a waste of time. I guarantee you that the employees of Kroger do not know their company's mission statement. I can also guarantee you that the employees of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel live their company's mission statement. What's the difference between the two?

For starters, the Kroger mission statement is dry and not at all empowering. It sounds as though it was written by their CEO (the CEO's name is at the bottom of the statement) one day and then handed out to everyone as "their" mission without any input from the employees.

Now compare that with the Ritz-Carlton's mission statement. It is definitely empowering. I was thinking while I was reading it that I wouldn't mind working there. Somehow, I get the feeling that ALL their employees have read, understand, and are living the mission.

The point of all this is: in order to have a successful mission statement, each employee must have ownership of the mission. They must know why they do what they do. If I were Kroger, I would tell each store manager to have each department come up with their own mission statement. Then, I would have an employee meeting to draft up each store's mission statement. Finally, I would then hold each and every employee responsible for fulfilling the mission.

One last point: If you say that the customer comes first, but then list it third in your order of priorities, does the customer REALLY come first?

Blogger Mission Statements - No. 3

Kyle at the Not So Silent Majority blog has this mission:

Up to this point, the blogosphere has been dominated primarily by older conservatives—and that’s fine. These pioneers have revolutionized the media and put the left-slanted, old media networks into a tailspin. Now is the time to bring this revolution to the up-and-coming generation of young conservatives, the group I like to call the Reagan Generation. For years, we young people have felt the direct effects of the psychedelic revolution that took place during the 1960s—a relentless barage of creeping liberalism that has poisoned our schools, culture and even our government. We cannot afford to be idle. We must act to take back our country from the socialist regime which has sought to undermine it. This is our time. In 2008, we will face the most important election of our lives, thus far. If Hillary Clinton wins the presidency, and her husband takes control of the United Nations, we can kiss our beloved country goodbye. Our democracy, our own freedom, will be outsourced to a committee of “experts” in Geneva because the Clinton oligarchy believes we are incapable of making our own decisions. For now, there is plenty of fighting to be had. The leftists in the Senate, led by Harry Reid, have drawn their swords on the judges issue—taking a stand against the constitution and attempting to thwart the president’s nominees. We, too, must draw our swords; if they push, we must push back harder. The left always gripes about bipartisanship when they are in the minority. The Republicans must learn to become a majority party; we must stand together. In this case, bipartisanship is dead. The deal that was brokered by the group of fourteen is only temporary. It is only a matter of time before Rehnquist and O’Connor step down and the gloves will come off. This issue, like others, is as an opportunity for us young conservatives to band together, to make our voices heard. We have the power to defeat Hillary if we mobilize our age group. We are an ideological army that must fight for our beliefs and our country.

Hillsdale College's Mission Statement

Mission

Hillsdale College is an independent, nonsectarian institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women "grateful to God for the inestimable blessings" resulting from civil and religious liberty and "believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings." It pursues the stated object of the founders: "to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary and scientific education" outstanding among American colleges "and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils."

The College considers itself a trustee of modern man's intellectual and spiritual inheritance from the Judeo-Christian faith and Greco-Roman culture, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.

By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

Identity

Hillsdale is a selective, coeducational college of liberal arts for approximately 1,200 students. Fully accredited, it graduates students with the degree of bachelor of arts or bachelor of science and prepares them for graduate study, for professional schools, for teaching and for many vocational and cultural pursuits.

Hillsdale's founders opened the doors to all, regardless of race or religion, in 1844. It was the first college in Michigan, and the second in the United States, to admit women on par with men. Its cosmopolitan student body is assembled from homes in 44 states and 13 foreign countries.

Aims

Hillsdale College maintains its defense of the traditional liberal arts curriculum, convinced that it is the best preparation for meeting the challenges of modern life and that it offers to all people of all backgrounds not only an important body of knowledge, but also timeless truths about the human condition. The liberal arts are dedicated to stimulating students' intellectual curiosity, to encouraging the critical, well-disciplined mind, and to fostering personal growth through academic challenge. They are a window on the past and a gateway to the future.

The College values the merit of each unique individual, rather than succumbing to the dehumanizing, discriminatory trend of so called "social justice" and "multicultural diversity," which judges individuals not as individuals, but as member of a group and which pits one group against other competing groups in divisive power struggles.

Our focus is on children and families, the environment and sustainable agriculture on family farms.

  • Capitalism and the wealth it produces do not create opportunity for everyone equally. We recognize that the gap between the rich and the poor is wider than at anytime since the 1920's.We strive to create economic opportunities for those who have been denied them and to advance new models of economic justice that are sustainable and replicable.

  • By definition, the manufacturing of products creates waste. We strive to minimize our negative impact on the environment.

  • The growing of food is overly reliant on the use of toxic chemicals and other methods that are unsustainable. We support sustainable and safe methods of food production that reduce environmental degradation, maintain the productivity of the land over time, and support the economic viability of family farms and rural communities.

  • We seek and support nonviolent ways to achieve peace and justice. We believe government resources are more productively used in meeting human needs than in building and maintaining weapons systems.

  • We strive to show a deep respect for human beings inside and outside our company and for the communities in which they live.

BP's (BP) Mission Statement

BP uses a Values Statement

Our Values

In all our activities we seek to display some unchanging, fundamental qualities – integrity, honest dealing, treating everyone with respect and dignity, striving for mutual advantage and contributing to human progress.

To translate these into guides for practical action, we build on them in our group values. By bringing together intentions previously articulated in a number of different policy statements, these make it clear that the group aims:

  • to have the best competitive corporate, operating and financial performance

  • to improve, and to be accessible, inclusive and diverse

  • to engage the creative talents of our employees, and develop and apply leading, cost-effective technology and intellectual creativity to enhance innovation and new ideas

  • to carry on its business in an environmentally responsible manner, and develop cleaner energy and renewable energy sources. The group is committed to the responsible treatment of the planet’s resources and to the development of sources of lower-carbon energy
For clarity, we express our group values under four headings: performance; people and capability; health, safety and environment; and external relationships.

Group Values

Performance

Compliance with law and ethics: to comply with all applicable laws and regulations in each jurisdiction in which the group operates. All employees will be required to comply with the code of conduct, which prohibits illegal, corrupt or unethical practices and demands high standards of probity.

Continuous improvement: to improve continuously in pursuit of the group values by setting targets and through encouragement of our employees.

Internal targets: to establish realistic and reasonable targets in the group plan. Progress against targets will be reported internally and analysed transparently and in a timely manner so that progress and variations can be understood readily.

Risk: to ensure through the group plan that progress takes place, applying a balanced approach to risk, value and innovation. No employee will be permitted to substitute his or her own risk preferences for those contained in the group plan.

People and Capability

Human capability and technology: to nurture human capability and invest to ensure that the right technology, skills, behaviours and intellectual property are available for the pursuit of the board goals.

Employee treatment: to treat employees fairly and with respect and dignity.

Employee expectations: to make clear the expectations the group has of each employee in line with the group’s general principles of delegation. Each employee will be given open and constructive feedback to aid his or her continuing development and performance.

Inclusion: to enable employees to feel included as part of a meritocratic organization of people from diverse backgrounds.

Merit and diversity: to recruit, select, develop and advance its employees on merit, irrespective of age, gender, nationality, physical challenge, race, religious belief, sexual orientation or identity.

Remuneration: to reward employees in a manner that reflects their role in the group and their contribution to the achievement of targets.

Health, Safety, and Environment

Health and safety: to ensure that there are no accidents, no harm to people and that no one is subject to unnecessary risk while working for the group.

Environmentally sound operations: to conduct the group’s activities in a manner that, consistent with the board goals, is environmentally responsible with the aspiration of ‘no damage to the environment’. The group will seek to drive down the environmental impact of its operations by reducing waste, emissions and discharges, and by using energy efficiently.

Transcending the environmental trade-off’: to contribute to human progress by applying the group’s resources in such a way that the perceived trade-off between global access to heat, light and mobility and the protection and improvement of the natural environment may be overcome.

External Relationships

Mutual advantage: to conduct our business on a long-term and sustainable basis, founded on relationships that are mutually advantageous and capable of enduring beyond a single transaction.

Social impact: to respect the quality of life and the economic and social progress of the communities in which the group operates and, in the context of the board goals, to give support to their advancement.

Human rights: to support the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. Understanding that governments have the primary responsibility to promote and protect human rights, the group shares the common goal of promoting respect for human rights, particularly those set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Transparency: to deal openly and transparently with shareholders and third parties. The group will set appropriate external targets in line with its internal targets and report against them periodically. The group will also act in accordance with the principles of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

Government relations and influence: always to conduct business in a manner that does not abuse the influence that may exist (or be perceived to exist) by virtue of the scope and scale of the group. The group will engage honourably with all governments in whose jurisdictions it operates but will take no part in partisan politics.

This is our road to sustainable, profitable growth, creating long-term value for our shareholders, our people, and our business partners.

Day-to-day responsibility is delegated to the senior management of the regions and operating companies. They are responsible for implementing these principles, if necessary through more detailed guidance tailored to local needs. Assurance of compliance is given and monitored each year. Corporate Executive Board Co.'s (EXBD) Mission Statement

Corporate Mission

The Corporate Executive Board provides best practices research, decision support tools, and executive education to a membership of the world's leading corporations and not-for-profit institutions. Our mission is to increase the effectiveness of executives and their enterprises by discovering and teaching to this membership the best new thinking and strategies from across industry and around the world.

At its best, our work is able to shape strategic debate and to accelerate tactical implementation in even the most progressive organizations. We proceed in this work without bias, placing stewardship for the member above the advancement of any idea or approach. We strive in each interaction to achieve a level of service that is unparalleled in our members' experience.

Corporate Values

Force of Ideas

We believe that great ideas - acute insights rooted in microeconomics and informed by human behavior - can carry an organization forward more surely than can access to superior resources, market power, or sheer effort. Our corporate task is to discover these ideas wherever they arise, within and beyond the membership, and to teach them to the membership at large.

Spirit of Generosity

Our ambition is to forge relationships with our members that go beyond the merely commercial. This spirit is expressed in our business model, which directs that wherever possible, we provide our services in unlimited amount. This aim beyond commerce also informs our personal relations; our goal is to serve members and each other beyond expectation and with appreciation, bringing honest joy to the opportunity to serve.

A Teaching Enterprise

We believe that "words matter," and that the greatest care should be taken in our communications with our members and with each other to strive for precision, acuity, and grace. We bear the complete responsibility for teaching the insights in our work to our members, and we gladly invest the increment of thought and effort required to communicate these thoughts through powerful, visual imagery that drives member interest and engagement.

Member Stewardship

Our purpose as a firm is to increase the personal and professional effectiveness of our members and their enterprises. This standard of care guides our current activities and helps to define our future strategic choices. We feel keenly the need to be responsible stewards of our members' contributions and confidences. We believe that close, continuing vigilance to the changing needs of our members is our single most important activity.

Constant Growth

We seek to create an entrepreneurial environment of ever-expanding horizons for our members, our staff, and our shareholders year over year. We believe that our ability to grow through organic innovation is effectively infinite, and we have placed the enterprise on a growth trajectory that demands our best efforts and that creates the most value for our shareholders.

Pure Meritocracy

Advancement in our firm depends solely on ability, performance, and contribution to our success. We challenge our highest performers to assume significant managerial and professional responsibility early in their careers, and our growth trajectory offers all staff members the opportunity for unusually rapid advancement.

Strength from Diversity

Our aspiration is to attract and engage a professional staff that reflects the diversity of our membership, and whose varied perspectives inform the creativity and relevance of our work. We are committed to providing a vibrant, inclusive professional environment, and we invest unusual effort in identifying and recruiting exceptional talent from diverse backgrounds.

Scholastic actually has a Credo

Scholastic produces educational materials to assist and inspire students:
  • To cultivate their minds to utmost capacity

  • To seek effective ways to live a satisfying life

  • To enlarge students' concern for and understanding of today's world

  • To help build a society free of prejudice and hate, and dedicated to the highest quality of life in community and nation
We strive to present the clearest explanation of current affairs and contemporary thought, and to encourage literary appreciation and expression consistent with the understanding and interests of young people at all levels of learning.

We believe in:

  • The worth and dignity of each individual

  • Respect for the diverse groups in our multicultural society

  • The right of each individual to live in a wholesome environment, and equally, the personal responsibility of each individual to help gain and preserve a decent and healthful environment, beginning with informed care of one's own body and mind
    High moral and spiritual values

  • The democratic way of life, with basic liberties — and responsibilities — for everyone

  • Constitutional, representative government, and even-handed justice that maintains equality of rights for all people

We believe that all sides of the issues of our times should be fairly discussed — with deep respect for facts and logical thinking — in classroom magazines, books, and other educational materials used in schools and homes.

Edward Jones' Mission Statement

Edward Jones has Core Principles rather than a mission statement. I don't mean to single out Edward Jones but I find it humorous that they make themselves out to be a "cut above the rest" and yet they sold mutual funds to their clients without telling them that they had special relationships with these mutual fund families that paid Edward Jones and their brokers bigger commissions. Think about that when you read the following:

_________________________________________________

Let's be honest. Most big investment firms seem exactly alike, selling the same investments and making the same promises. You might look at Edward Jones and see just another company, but we believe we're different from the inside out.

At Edward Jones, we're guided by a set of long-standing principles. We serve individual investors, like you. We opt for proven, long-term investing strategies instead of the latest investment fads. And, while we share information on our Web site, we believe it's more important to provide personalized attention and build relationships face to face in our local, community-based offices.

CORE PRINCIPLES

At Edward Jones, we are guided by a set of principles that have shaped all aspects of our business, particularly the way we have built our client relationships and the investment strategies we recommend. It might sound old-fashioned or even, yes, unfashionable. And it may not be the right approach for everyone. But we've learned through decades of experience that it's a tried and true way of helping you succeed.

  • We are focused on one client, the long-term investor. All aspects of our business - from the location of our offices to the investments and services we offer - are aligned to help us better understand and meet our clients' unique needs.

We like to work with clients who share our long-term view of investing. That doesn't mean you need to have millions to invest with us. In fact, we value every investor.

  • We are committed to a long-term philosophy that emphasizes quality and diversification. We make every effort to avoid investments that are likely to confuse or disappoint clients.

Our investment philosophy is characterized by what we won't do as much as by what we will do. We discourage investment representatives from selling any stock priced under $4 per share. We don't sell any options or commodities. And our research department typically provides research opinions only on companies that have long stable operating histories. We believe the smartest way to build wealth is to invest in a variety of quality companies that have solid track records and hold them for the long term.

We also discourage our clients from frequent trading - just one reason we don't offer online trading. It's been proven time and again that a long-term investment strategy is one of the soundest ways to help achieve financial goals.

And we don't believe in pushing investments just because they're trendy or someone says they're hot. We're committed to looking out for your best interests and helping you develop a plan that makes sense for your specific goals. And if your needs change over time, we'll work with you to help diversify and rebalance your portfolio accordingly.

  • Relationships are key, and in our view, meeting face to face builds strong relationships. Our offices are welcoming, accessible and located in the communities where our clients live and work.

At Edward Jones, we prefer to meet you face to face and maintain a personal relationship. We talk, we listen, and our goal is to always put you first.

We believe it's important to live and work in the same communities as our clients. It might not sound like a big deal, but we believe that by knowing the community, we can better understand your needs. When we live side by side and see you around town, we feel it makes us more connected and more accountable than someone you only know over the telephone.

Being in your neighborhood also means you can drop by if something is on your mind. We have an open-door policy. And because our offices are typically small and conveniently located, they're often more approachable.
